Residency Prizes

In the spirit of the partnership between The Herb Alpert Foundation and CalArts, the Herb Alpert Award has developed collaborative relationships with four residency programs, all of whom honor and support talented artists, and their forays into the unknown.

Herb Alpert/MacDowell Fellowship

Founded in 1907 and situated on 450 woodland acres in Peterborough, New Hampshire, MacDowell, the most distinguished and oldest residency program in America, is known for the talent and mix of its artists. Fellows include architects, composers, film and video makers, writers and interdisciplinary and visual artists. There are 32 private studios assigned according to the work proposed.

Herb Alpert/Ucross Residency Prize

Located on a 20,000-acre working cattle ranch in northeastern Wyoming, Ucross is an internationally known retreat for artists, writers, composers, choreographers, performers, and collaborative groups working in all creative disciplines. Ucross fosters the creative spirit of artists and groups by providing uninterrupted time, studio space, living accommodations, and the experience of the majestic High Plains, while serving as a responsible steward of its historic ranch. Residencies are awarded to 110 artists each year. Ten artists are in residence at one time, typically a mix of visual artists, writers, composers, and choreographers. Since the residency program began in 1983, Ucross has supported nearly 2,600 artists, including 90 visual artists and composers who have been supported by Herb Alpert/Ucross Residency Prizes during the two organizations’ 17-year partnership.
