Residencies

CalArts Residencies

During the year of their Award, each recipient worked with CalArts faculty to design a week-long residency, offering workshops, performances, seminars, lectures, screenings, conversations, and individual critiques with students.

The residency was created as a way for these accomplished, risk-taking mid-career artists to engage with and hopefully impact the next generation of art makers.

After each panel had chosen the Award recipients, it considered and selected other candidates who had indicated interest in month-long residencies at distinguished artist communities. A stipend was provided by the Herb Alpert Award program.

The Award staff worked in partnership with residency programs equally committed to artists making challenging work. Over thirty years, more than 200 Herb Alpert Award nominees spent time at MacDowell, Ragdale, Ucross, Hedgebrook, Sacatar, and Yaddo.
